Social Matter 6 – Freedom Of Speech

Meryl Streep gave a compelling speech at the Golden Globes 2017. She made some people laugh, she made some think, and she made some Trumpsters angry. But I wonder what would happen if Meryl was an Indian actress? I wonder how people would have reacted to her funny, but hard-hitting comments on the “man in power” of our country. I wonder if they would ask her to go “back” to Pakistan or somewhere! I wonder.

What would people “in my country” do to people who speak boldly on public platforms?

If I were Meryl,

I would be called names,

“Rolemodel” wouldn’t make the cut.

We have other names for strong,

Opinionated women-

In my country.

If I were Meryl,

They wouldn’t listen to

The important things I have to say

Because people see boobs

And short dresses first-

In my country.

If I were Meryl

I would be called a “dumb” actress

Or wait,

most likely a prostitute

Because there’s a label for women

who stand tall –

In my country.

If I were Meryl,

I would be called an anti-national

Because that’s the trending word-

In my country.

If I were Meryl

I would be asked to go back

To a country that is not mine at all

Because that’s the comeback to everything-

In my country.

If I were Meryl

I would be asked to care less

And mind my own business

Because we aren’t allowed to care

For anything but the national anthem-

In my country.

If I were Meryl

They wouldn’t play my movies

in the theatre

Because that’s how

they exercise their power –

In my country.

If I were Meryl

I would have a speech,

An inspiring one

But no freedom

To give it-

In my country.
