What is a democracy?

Democracy is a form of government in which all eligible citizens participate equally—either directly or indirectly through elected representatives—in the proposal, development, and creation of laws.

Pay attention to the word “eligible citizens”, and ask yourself a question – “Have I in any manner contributed to the proposal, development, and creation of law and government in my country?”

If you have answered yes, then you’ve been a responsible citizen. If being a responsible citizen is too big a responsibility then you could just think that the blue ink on your finger has made you a responsible friend, husband, wife, father, mother, brother, and sister.

If you do not know what I’m talking about or have conveniently waved it off and answered with a no, then you my friend have scrapped my country off the democracy title. You are that person who has complained, who has argued, who despises the politicians, who thinks the country needs to change, but you are also that person who decided to stay indifferent on the day which could very easily be called the “Judgment day” for our country (well at least for the next 5 years, and God knows for how many years to come).

Kathryn Lasky said “I am ashamed of anyone who has eyes and still can’t see”.

Agreed. Aren’t we all?

But, what do we do of people who saw everything, spoke of it every day, and when there was an opportunity to choose, they decided to  put their hands down, and do nothing?

Oh sorry not do nothing. Of course we did other things. We went to the movies, we went to the restaurant, we drank at the club, we took a trip to Thailand, we slept in (I’m sure the weather was nice and cozy). Clearly, these are things that just couldn’t wait! Elections can wait. Before you know it they’ll be back in 5 years, isn’t it?

What good are your complains and discussions to the country, when half the citizens of that country decide to disappear on the most important day of the year!

All these days, what were we all angry about? Who were we angry with?

The Politicians? The Government?  Or the media?

At least they’re all doing their bare minimum to showcase their skill set, and show their presence. They’re doing their job, be it making false promises or honest commitments, they’re doing it  (not a good one a lot of us think, but hey a lot of us did not do anything to change it, so I guess “us lot” should just go back to Thailand or the movies).

Can you still say that there’s bad governance in the country? That the wrong party is ruling our country? And our Prime Minister isn’t good enough? The nation is heading towards a state of complete chaos and atrocity?

If you answer yes to that then it’s time to get a reality check.

You cannot complain or point fingers! Because you did not VOTE! You did not initiate change!

The chicken has hatched in most of the states, but to people of those states, where there’s still a chance, get up! Don’t be lazy.

It’s time you did something to trigger change! Let’ show them the finger, shall we?
